What is Council Tax?
Most households in the UK are required to pay council tax to the local authority (council), whether they rent or own. The tax is used to fund local services including waste collection, street cleaning and community facilities. The amount you pay is based on the property’s value and your local council’s rates.
Do international students need to pay council tax?
In most cases, full-time students in the UK are exempt from paying council tax. However, you must register with your local authority to avoid a penalty charge and potential prosecution.
If you live with non-students, or are not considered a student under your council’s criteria, you may have to pay the full amount or only receive a partial discount.
